Survey Finds 50% Elderly Residents in Non-Urban Areas of Noida and Greater Noida Suffer from Chronic Illnesses
HelpAge India Study Reveals Alarming Health Conditions Among Elderly Population
A new survey conducted by HelpAge India has brought to light the health struggles faced by elderly residents in non-urban areas of Noida and Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The study, which spanned from June 1, 2021, to May 31, 2022, analyzed data from over two lakh senior citizens aged between 56 and 91 years, both men and women, residing in around 70 lower-income neighborhoods in the region.
The survey revealed that a staggering 50% of the elderly population in these areas are grappling with chronic illnesses. Among the most prevalent health issues are respiratory problems, diabetes, skin conditions, and blood pressure-related concerns. Dr. Dhirendra Kumar Saxena, part of the team that conducted health camps in collaboration with village panchayats and the local district administration, expressed concern over the high prevalence of these chronic diseases among senior adults.
Respiratory Problems, Diabetes, and Hypertension Among the Common Ailments
According to the survey, 40% of elders reported facing breathing difficulties, with respiratory problems emerging as a significant concern. Five percent of senior citizens were diagnosed with asthma and other respiratory disorders. Dr. Ritu Rana, Mission Head of Healthcare at HelpAge India, stated that many seniors living in villages and poor suburban localities along the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway have complained of respiratory issues, which they attribute to the pandemic situation and exposure to dust and traffic pollution.
The study also shed light on the alarming increase in cases of hypertension, depression, and diabetes among the elderly in the region’s sub-urban and rural areas. The pandemic’s impact on incomes and reduced opportunities for part-time work have compounded the challenges faced by lower-income families. The resulting isolation and fear have led to mental health issues like anxiety and depression among the elderly population.
COVID-19 Pandemic and Climate Change Impacted Lower-Income Elderly Hardest
The survey highlighted that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a debilitating inflammatory lung condition causing restricted airflow, affected hundreds of elderly residents in the region’s lower-income colonies between November 2021 and March 2022. The statistics are worrisome, indicating the severe impact of the pandemic and urbanization on the physical and emotional well-being of senior citizens.
The HelpAge India survey serves as a wake-up call, urging authorities and communities to address the pressing health challenges faced by the elderly population in non-urban areas of Noida and Greater Noida. Measures to improve healthcare facilities, reduce pollution levels, and enhance social support for the elderly are essential to safeguard their well-being.
