A recent study showed that people who took vitamin D supplements saw an improvement in their symptoms of depression. According to Dr. Anuj Choudhary, Founder – Animal Booster Nutrition – Vitamin D is helpful for the functioning of brain cells and an insufficient amount of vitamin D can cause mental issues like depression and anxiety.
“There’s a link between vitamin D and depression. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient and it helps to keep bones healthy and strong and also boosts the immune system. There have been studies in the past which show that people dealing with depression have the deficiency of vitamin D. Vitamin D is helpful for the functioning of brain cells and an insufficient amount of vitamin D can cause mental issues like depression and anxiety,” said Dr. Anuj Choudhary.
Vitamin D is required for the functioning of brain cells and that’s why it reduces depression. It plays an important role in lighting up the mood and warding off the depression.
“When a person is going through a hard time and dealing with depression and anxiety they usually lose their nerve and stay indoors for the whole day which gradually makes them unhappy and irritated due to decrease in vitamin D. So, Vitamin D acts as a mood booster for these types of people,” the doctor added.
Dr Choudhary said that there are many good sources of vitamin D like daily exposure to sun in the morning for almost 30 minutes to 1 hour is the best way to get Vitamin D.
“If you are allergic to sunlight, you can also have a vitamin D rich diet like milk, eggs, mushrooms and fish. If you are vegetarian, then you can always have supplements of vitamin D,” he said.
And this is why a person dealing with anxiety and depression is always suggested and advised to take vitamin D tablets because they act as an antidepressants in the body, he explained.
