National Safe Motherhood Day is observed on April 11 every year. It is an initiative of the White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI). The government of India in 2003 declared the national safe motherhood day on April 11. It is observed to enforce that women must have the availability and adequate access to care during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal services.
India is supposedly the first country to announce National Safe Motherhood Day on the 11th of April.
India needs to educate more mothers about the precautions and safety measures during and after pregnancy so that the mother and child can stay safe from any kind of complications. In India, the death rate because of pregnancy complications is 12% of total maternal deaths worldwide.
An important fact about safe motherhood during the Covid-19 pandemic
The outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic has been proclaimed a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Every single pregnant lady, incorporating those with affirmed or suspected COVID-19 diseases, reserve the privilege to top-notch care previously, during, and after labor. This incorporates antenatal, infant, post-pregnancy, intrapartum, and psychological wellness care. There are straightforward advances we would all be able to take to keep ourselves, our friends and family, and the weakest protected from COVID-19.
Right now, remaining at home has the most compensating benefits. Pregnant ladies should remain at home except if they need critical clinical consideration.
According to WHO, there is not enough evidence to determine whether the virus is transmitted from a mother to her baby during pregnancy, or the potential impact this may have on the baby. Pregnant women should continue to follow appropriate precautions to protect themselves from exposure to the virus and seek medical care early if experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.
Considering the benefits of breastfeeding to newborns, all mothers need to continue breastfeeding while applying all the necessary precautions.
“Every Mother should be ensured with the healthcare facilities during or after pregnancy. It’s their right. It should be ensured by the Government that every pregnant woman gets the healthcare facility that she deserves. Women living in rural areas need special care and attention” said Dr. Rekha Srivastava, Gynecologist.
More women are getting educated these days and they know about the safety measures along with the inhabited mother qualities but in rural areas, pregnant women still face the issues during and after birth. The reason is that they are not being educated enough and don’t have access to adequate healthcare facilities. It should be ensured that pregnant women of rural areas also get the same pregnancy facilities as women who live in cities.
