Celebrating the Value of Life and Well-Being on Global Wellness Day
Global Wellness Day, observed every second Saturday of June, has become a significant event worldwide, emphasizing the importance of our well-being. Originating in Turkey in 2012, this day serves as a reminder to recognize and prioritize our physical, mental, social, and spiritual health. With the 2022 theme of #ThinkMagenta, Global Wellness Day aims to inspire individuals to cultivate positive thoughts and make a positive impact on their lives.
Nurturing Positive Thoughts for Mental Well-Being
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental well-being plays a crucial role in our overall health. Dr. Karthiyayini Mahadevan, Head of Wellness and Wellbeing at Columbia Pacific Communities, highlights the profound connection between our thoughts and our physiology. Negative thoughts can trigger a cascade of reactions, leading to fear and hopelessness. On the other hand, positive thinking empowers us at a cellular level by promoting nourishment and vitality.
The Role of Diet in Cultivating Positive Thoughts
Our diet significantly impacts our mental well-being. Ancient wisdom reminds us that “you are what you eat.” To maintain a positive outlook, it is essential to consume a balanced diet rich in complex carbohydrates, adequate protein, healthy fats, and essential vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. Including millets, seasonal fruits, fresh greens, and salads in our meals provides the necessary nutrients. Additionally, practicing mindful eating and having an early dinner can improve the quality of sleep, contributing to overall well-being.
Mind-Body Practices for Positive Energy
Incorporating mind-body practices like yoga and Tai-Chi into our routine can help balance our energy and promote positive thinking. Yoga enhances clarity of thought through pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation, enabling us to respond to any situation with a positive attitude. Similarly, the mindful movements of Tai-Chi channelize the life energy called Chi, allowing us to cultivate focus and positivity.
