Over 160 Doctors, 107 Nurses Lost Lives Due To COVID-19 In India

So far, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 162 doctors, 107 nurses and 44 ASHA staff in the country, Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

The statistics are based on the state intimations obtained up to January 22.

Minister of State for Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey claimed this in the House in response to a query on the number of healthcare workers killed due to COVID-19, including physicians, nurses and ASHA workers who were affected.

On whether the Ministry has taken note of the data submitted by the Indian Medical Association regarding the number of healthcare workers who died due to COVID-19 and any follow-up verification of the same.

Mr Choubey said the insurance disbursement process was de-centralized under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP: Insurance Scheme).

Accordingly, the verification of a person affected and died to COVID-19 vests with state governments/Central government authorities concerned.

The healthcare agency, company or office where the individual was employed/engaged by the institution carries out the requisite certification for claims.

They shall send the papers, as the case may be, to the Competent Authority for State and UT or to the Competent Authority for Central Government, Central Autonomous Hospitals/PSU, AIIMS, INIs and other Central Ministerial Hospitals.

The responsible authorities then forward a claim to the insurance provider and file it.
