New Study Shows One Out Of Three Men Are Diagnosed With genital HPV Around The World

A recent study has found that around one out of three men around the world above the age of 15 years are diagnosed with at least one form of genital human papillomavirus (HPV). The study also shows that nearly one out of five men are infected with one or more high-risk strains of HPV. The findings of the study have been released in a journal known as the Lancet Global Health.

The authors of the study have said that men are at a greater risk of being infected with genital HPV infection. The study focuses on including men in efforts to control cases of HPV infection. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a viral infection that leads to the growth of skin or mucous membranes (warts). Around 100 types of HPV infection exist across the globe.

The study shows how frequent genital HPV infection is among men and women around the globe. High-risk strains of HPV infection can result in genital warts, penile and anal cancer among men. The chief of Global HIV, Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections Programs at WHO, Meg Doherty said that it is necessary to reduce the frequency of HPV infection among men and women.

The findings of the study show that any type of HPV is nearly 31 per cent prevalent, and high-risk strains of HPV are nearly 21 per cent prevalent around the world. While HPV 16 is the most frequent type of HPV. The frequency of HPV is quite high among young adults between the ages of 25 to 29 years and later it stabilizes or reduces thereafter.

The majority of HPV infections in men and women are asymptomatic, but they can lead to long-term mortality and consequences. Over 340,000 women lose their lives due to cervical cancer caused by HPV infections. In men, genital HPV can lead to anogenital warts, resulting in major morbidity and increased rates of HPV transmission. HPV 16 is considered the most severe type of HPV that is linked to oropharyngeal, penile, and anal cancers. As per the data, HPV infection caused nearly 69,400 cases of cancer in men in 2018.
