India is celebrating a huge win in the fight against Measles and Rubella, as the country receives the prestigious Measles and Rubella Champion Award. The exciting ceremony took place at the American Red Cross Headquarters in Washington D.C., USA on March 6th, 2024. Ambassador Sripriya Ranganathan, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of India, Washington D.C., joyfully accepted the award on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
The Measles and Rubella Partnership, a team of health superheroes including the American Red Cross, BMGF, GAVI, US CDC, UNF, UNICEF, and WHO, teamed up to reduce global measles deaths and stop rubella sickness. India’s award recognizes its outstanding efforts to keep children safe from these infectious diseases.
The award also highlights India’s leadership in the measles and rubella elimination program. They cleverly used ‘measles as a tracer’ to make routine immunization stronger under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). Even with tough challenges, India made amazing progress by reducing measles and rubella cases and stopping outbreaks.
The Indian government played a superhero role with its MR vaccination campaign in high-risk areas. They came up with cool strategies to reach places where not many people live. They also kept a close watch on sickness with strong surveillance systems and made sure everyone knew how to stay healthy.
The Measles and Rubella Champion Award is like a big gold star for all the amazing people in India – health workers, doctors, leaders, and communities. Together, they made sure 50 districts had zero measles cases and 226 districts stayed clear of rubella for a whole year!
