New Delhi, 28 July 2025: A 25-year-old youth, Rakesh from Khammam district, tragically died after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest while playing badminton in Hyderabad’s Nagole area on Sunday night. The incident occurred around 8 PM, leaving the local community in shock. A CCTV video that has surfaced shows Rakesh collapsing mid-game while fellow players attempted to help.
CPR Attempted But Unsuccessful
Eyewitnesses say Rakesh suddenly fell during the match. Players immediately administered CPR and called for help, but unfortunately, by the time he reached the hospital, doctors declared him brought dead. He was working at a private firm and living in the city.
What Is Sudden Cardiac Arrest?
Cardiac arrest happens when the heart suddenly stops beating, cutting off blood supply to the brain and other vital organs. It differs from a heart attack, which involves a blockage. Cardiac arrest is more deadly as it strikes without warning and can kill within minutes without emergency treatment.
Rising Cases in Young Adults
There’s growing concern about the increasing number of young adults experiencing sudden cardiac arrests, often during physical activities like sports or workouts. Experts link this to undiagnosed heart conditions, extreme stress, overexertion, and unhealthy lifestyle choices.
Why Young, Fit People Are Also at Risk
- Genetic heart issues like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy often go undetected.
- Excessive use of supplements or steroids can stress the heart.
- Lack of cardiac screening in young people doing intense physical activity.
- Long COVID and post-infection inflammation may silently affect the heart.
How to Spot Cardiac Risks Early
- Unexplained chest discomfort or breathlessness during exercise
- Dizziness, fainting, or palpitations
- Family history of sudden deaths or heart disease
- High blood pressure or obesity at a young age
Precautionary Steps You Can Take
- Annual heart health screenings, especially if active in sports
- Avoid extreme workouts without supervision
- Stay hydrated and avoid overexertion in hot weather
- Recognize early warning signs and never ignore them
CPR Training Can Save Lives
Timely CPR and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) can double or triple the chance of survival during cardiac arrest. Experts urge every school, gym, and sports facility to ensure CPR training and have defibrillators on-site.
This heartbreaking incident is a stark reminder that cardiac arrest is not just an old age issue. Young adults, too, need to be aware of heart health and the importance of preventive check-ups, especially if engaged in intense physical activity.
