Elevated levels of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol can lead to the gradual buildup of plaque in arteries, a condition called atherosclerosis. Over time, this narrows blood vessels, reduces blood flow to the heart, and increases the risk of a sudden cardiac event.
