Ramesh (name changed), a 24-year-old labourer, started his routine day at a construction site in Pratap Vihar Ghaziabad. The poor fellow did not know that what was in store for him that day. He was passing by the building when other workers were opening the shattering on 20th floor. Suddenly, a 20 ft long iron bar (saria) fell during the shattering opening. People shouted for Ramesh to get out of the way and take shelter.
As a reflex Ramesh looked up and had no chance to get out of the way of the falling iron rod. The 20 ft rod pierced through the head like an arrow visible from front and back. People rushed to help him and after cutting the rods rushed him to Flores hospital.
Dr. M K Singh, Senior Physician & Director, Flores Hospital & Dr. Gaurav Gupta, Orthopedic Surgeon & Director, Flores Hospital says, “When Ramesh was brought to the hospital, his condition did not look promising. He had a 12 mm iron rod protruding from the front and back of his head. He immediately ran initial tests and he was attended by our neurosurgeon Dr. Abhinav Gupta, who performed a marathon surgery to remove the rod and give a new lease of life to the patient.
Dr. Abhinav Gupta, Neurosurgeon, Flores Hospital says, “In my neurosurgery career of 20 years, it was the first time I came across this case. The four-hour surgery was a challenging one. I had to open half of the skull to separate the iron rod from the bone first. The biggest challenge was removing the iron rod from the brain without doing any further damage, which I was able to do successfully. The bone was kept under the skin in the abdominal wall to keep it viable. We are monitoring the patient closely and outcomes are looking positive.”
“We are proud of Dr. Abhinav Gupta, who took the challenge and performed the surgery alone. Lifesaving surgeries like this make our existence worthwhile. Flores hospital is dedicated to providing state of art facilities to its patients.”, added Dr. Singh.
