Experts Warn of Concerning Side Effect from Ozempic and Other Weight Loss Drugs

Weight loss drugs have created a buzz in the fitness world, with many Americans turning to them to shed pounds and avoid chronic diseases. Medications like Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Zepbound, known as GLP-1 drugs, are popular for their weight loss benefits. However, using these drugs without proper guidance can lead to unexpected side effects.

The Promise of Weight Loss Drugs

Semaglutide, sold under brand names like Wegovy and Ozempic, helps people lose weight by decreasing their appetite. These drugs offer hope to those struggling with obesity and related health issues. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved Ozempic for treating diabetes in 2017. In 2021, a higher dose of semaglutide was approved to treat obesity under the name Wegovy. Many people, including celebrities, praised these drugs for their remarkable results.

Eating Disorders

Despite their benefits, weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic have been linked to eating disorders. Psychologist Tom Hildebrandt from Mount Sinai’s Center of Excellence in Eating and Weight Disorders told NBC, “They start using this drug and next thing you know, they’ve developed what looks very much like anorexia nervosa.” Health experts are concerned these drugs may cause or worsen eating disorders.

How the Drugs Work?

GLP-1 drugs mimic a hormone called glucagon-like peptide 1, which controls blood sugar and reduces hunger. At high doses, patients can lose up to 21% of their body weight. However, abusing these drugs can have serious consequences. Rapid weight loss can trick the brain into thinking the body is starving, leading patients to dangerously restrict their food intake.

The Risks of Overuse

When people go overboard with these drugs, they can deprive their bodies of essential nutrients and calories. This restrictive eating can spiral out of control, especially for those with existing eating disorders. Dr. Aaron Keshen, co-director of the Nova Scotia Eating Disorder Provincial Service in Canada, told NBC News, “The restrictive eating unintentionally spirals out of control until people can’t help themselves.”

Advice from Health Experts

Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro, advises people experiencing side effects to speak with their healthcare provider. The company also monitors and reports safety information for all its medications.

Balance and Caution

Weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic can be effective tools for managing obesity, but they must be used with caution. It’s essential to follow a balanced diet and exercise plan while using these medications and to be aware of the potential risks. If you or someone you know is experiencing negative side effects, consult a healthcare professional immediately.
