The rapid surge in the number of COVID-19 cases has been mostly credited to the new variant Omicron. Several countries have witnessed a considerably large number of cases ever since this ‘variant of concern’ was reported. The World Health Organization (WHO) too has said that Omicron continues to pose a ‘very high’ risk to the general public because of its high transmissibility rate. In light of the current situation, researchers and medical professionals are closely monitoring every development related to the new variant. They have now noticed some new symptoms in COVID-19 patients infected with the Omicron. These symptoms were reported even in fully vaccinated patients.
According to a Zoe COVID app study, the new symptoms of the Omicron include nausea and loss of appetite. It is pertinent to mention that most of the symptoms of coronavirus are like regular cold or common flu. They are – headaches, a runny nose, a sore throat, frequent sneezing, and feeling fatigued. They all feel like symptoms of the common cold and that is why people usually get confused and don’t get tested for COVID-19. Additionally, symptoms like loss of smell and cough are now in the ‘minority of symptoms’.
No loss of smell or taste
According to the UK’s ZOE Covid study app, some of the most common symptoms reported in COVID-19 patients infected with Omicron are mild fever, fatigue, body pain, night sweats, scratchy throat. The notable thing is that they have no sign of an impaired sense of smell and taste.
Even though a fully vaccinated person is safe from severe infections, there is still every chance of him or her getting infected with the coronavirus. According to Professor Spector, the new variant is as prevalent in unvaccinated people as in those who are fully vaccinated. In such a scenario, coronavirus vaccines and booster shots are the only silver lining against the coronavirus and its variants.
