A Mother’s Ordeal: ‘Negotiated Like In ‘Sabzi-Mandi’ To Find Hospital Bed For Son Who Needed Life-Saving Blood Transfusion’

The health system in Delhi is apparently in a very poor state as everyday, people of the national capital are sharing their ordeal. The latest one is of a mother who couldn’t find a hospital bed for her son who needed a life-saving blood transfusion. Her son needs it every month, and this has been part of his life for the past 25 years.

“My son who is an adult needs a blood procedure every month because of the lifestyle condition he has for the past 25 years. It is a life-saving thing for him and he cannot live without it. Post his COVID-19 test, it was time to get his procedure done. But we kept going to all hospitals in Delhi but none of them was ready to give bed for one day. All they were interested was to take the bed for at least 10-12 days and that too after paying a package of 15-20 lakhs,” the woman can be heard saying in the video shared by BJP leader Varun Gandhi on Twitter.

“In a time of crisis, while doctors continue to selflessly serve all, predatory private mega-hospitals are trying to monetise grief & panic, ignoring their social duty (while continuing to benefit from state incentives) and further burdening the already beleaguered common man,” Gandhi wrote while sharing the video.

“I kept on saying that he just needs blood procedure which will take just four hours but they don’t listen to us. I went to all hospitals from top-notch to even small ones. I went to Max, Apollo, City hospital. I went everywhere best possible even small nursing homes. They all refused. After all this, my brother tried to get me a room in Medanta, Gurgaon. Once my son gets to the hospital early morning at 8:30, one hour later we get a call from the hospital asking us to transfer Rs 2 lakh. I was shocked. I said you told us it will cost 3,200 for the procedure and the room charges. What is the Rs 2 lakh for? They straight away said that you need to deposit Rs 2 lakh at the moment or we will not be able to do the procedure,” she said

The woman argued with the person and tried to make him understand. “… but you will not believe they started negotiating with me like ‘sabzi-mandi’, They then asked how much you are ready to give, would you give Rs 1.5 lakh? Would you give Rs 1 lakh? Then they said ok give us Rs 90,000. This was the kind of scenario and that too on the telephone. I kept down the phone and called the person who had arranged the bed for me,” she said.

At last, she was asked to deposit Rs 25,000, which, according to the woman was more than what it should ideally be. However, she kept quiet and deposited the money.
