Stratus COVID Variant in US: New Strain Causes Hoarse Voice, Persistent Cough, and Rising Alarm

COVID

New Delhi, 08 August 2025: A new COVID-19 variant, dubbed ‘Stratus’, is rapidly making its presence felt across the United States, prompting growing concern among health authorities and the public. Early reports indicate that this strain is leading to a noticeable increase in infections, with patients exhibiting symptoms such as hoarseness, persistent cough, sore throat, fatigue, and nasal congestion.

What Is the Stratus Variant?

The Stratus variant is a newly identified sublineage of the Omicron family of SARS-CoV-2. Like previous variants, it has mutations in its spike protein, which may influence how easily it spreads and how well it evades immunity from prior infections or vaccination.

Although scientists are still studying its genetic makeup, preliminary data suggests that Stratus could be more transmissible than some earlier variants. However, there is no clear evidence yet that it causes more severe illness.

Symptoms Reported So Far

Patients infected with the Stratus variant have commonly reported:

  • Hoarse voice
  • Persistent dry or productive cough
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue and body aches
  • Nasal congestion or runny nose
  • Headache
  • Mild fever in some cases

These symptoms resemble those of other Omicron subvariants but with hoarseness emerging as a more distinctive early sign in many patients.

How Is Stratus Spreading?

The variant appears to be spreading quickly in multiple US states, particularly in areas where indoor gatherings are common during summer events. Health experts suggest that waning immunity and relaxed preventive measures are contributing to the rise in cases.

Large gatherings, travel, and reduced mask usage are also believed to be accelerating the spread. While vaccination rates in the US remain relatively high, immunity against infection—especially from new variants—may diminish over time.

Is Stratus More Dangerous?

Current evidence does not indicate that the Stratus variant leads to more severe disease than previous strains. Most reported cases have been mild to moderate, with hospitalisation rates similar to other Omicron subvariants. However, individuals who are elderly, immunocompromised, or have underlying health conditions remain at higher risk of complications.

Experts caution that even if the variant is not more deadly, its increased transmissibility could lead to a larger number of cases overall, which may still strain healthcare systems.

Prevention Measures to Consider

To minimise the risk of infection, health authorities recommend following standard COVID-19 preventive measures:

  1. Stay up to date with vaccinations and boosters – Vaccination remains one of the most effective tools for reducing severe illness.
  2. Wear masks in crowded indoor spaces – Especially if local infection rates are rising.
  3. Maintain good ventilation – Ensure air circulation in homes, offices, and public spaces.
  4. Practice good hygiene – Wash hands frequently and use sanitiser when soap and water aren’t available.
  5. Stay home if unwell – To avoid spreading the virus to others.

Most Stratus cases are mild, but individuals should seek medical care if they experience:

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Persistent chest pain or pressure
  • High fever that doesn’t improve
  • Confusion or difficulty waking up
  • Bluish lips or face

These could be signs of more severe COVID-19 requiring urgent treatment.

The emergence of Stratus highlights the virus’s ongoing evolution and its ability to produce new variants that can evade immunity and spread rapidly. Health experts stress that COVID-19 is far from over, and continued vigilance is necessary to prevent future surges.

Monitoring new strains, updating vaccines when necessary, and maintaining a balance between normal life and preventive health practices will be key in the months ahead.
