New Delhi, 02 June 2025: As of June 2, 2025, India has reported a significant increase in active COVID 19 cases, with the total reaching 3,961, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This marks a substantial rise from the 257 active cases recorded on May 22. Indicating a more than tenfold increase in just under two weeks.
Delhi Reports Highest Single-Day Increase
Delhi has witnessed its highest one-day jump in COVID-19 cases, reporting 47 new infections, bringing the city’s active caseload to 483. This surge has prompted health authorities to issue advisories and reinforce preventive measures across the capital.
State-Wise Breakdown of Active Cases
The distribution of active COVID-19 cases across various states is as follows:
- Kerala: 1,435 active cases
- Maharashtra: 506 active cases
- Delhi: 483 active cases
- West Bengal: 331 active cases
- Karnataka: 238 active cases
- Tamil Nadu: 189 active cases
- Gujarat: 265 active cases
Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases, followed by Maharashtra and Delhi.
In the past 24 hours, India has reported four new COVID-19 related deaths, with one each in Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Kerala. This brings the total number of fatalities since January 2025 to 32.
Emergence of New Variants
Health experts attribute the recent surge in cases to the emergence of new sub-variants of the virus. Including NB.1.8.1, which has been designated as a ‘Variant Under Monitoring’ by the World Health Organization. This variant, along with others like JN.1, is believed to have higher transmissibility, contributing to the rapid increase in cases.
Government Response and Public Advisory
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has assured the public that the situation is under control. Emphasizing that most new cases are mild and manageable. Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to COVID-appropriate behavior. Including wearing masks in crowded places, practicing hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing.
Hospitals and healthcare facilities have advised to stay prepared for any potential increase in hospitalizations, ensuring adequate supplies of oxygen, ventilators, and essential medicines.
