New Delhi, 21 May 2025: After a prolonged period of relative stability, India is once again witnessing a mild uptick in COVID-19 cases, with 164 new infections reported over the past week, according to the Union Health Ministry. While the numbers remain low compared to previous waves, health authorities are keeping a close eye on regional trends as Kerala and Maharashtra emerge as the states with the highest tally this week.
The current surge, although not alarming in terms of hospitalisation or mortality, is a stark reminder that the COVID-19 virus has not been completely eradicated and continues to linger. Public health experts are urging citizens to stay vigilant, especially with the presence of newer variants like JN.1, which are being closely monitored globally for their transmissibility and impact.
Kerala and Maharashtra Lead the Weekly Count
Out of the 164 fresh cases recorded across the country, Kerala and Maharashtra accounted for the majority. According to official data:
Kerala reported over 70 new cases, making it the state with the highest number of weekly infections.
Maharashtra followed with around 40 cases, prompting local health authorities to increase surveillance and testing in affected districts.
Other states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Delhi also reported a handful of isolated cases.
Despite the spike, no new containment zones have declared, and hospital admissions remain very low, indicating that most cases are either asymptomatic or mild in nature.
Current Status of Hospitalisations and Deaths
In a related update, Mumbai reported two COVID-related deaths in the past week, both involving elderly individuals with underlying health conditions. These unfortunate incidents highlight the importance of continued caution, especially among high-risk populations.
According to the Health Ministry, the overall COVID-19 situation in India remains under control, with active cases at a minimal level and no significant strain on the healthcare system. However, experts advise against complacency, especially as newer variants are being detected in parts of Asia.
Experts Warn About JN.1 Variant
Epidemiologists particularly concerned about the spread of the JN.1 variant, which has reported as the dominant strain in some regions. While there is currently no evidence suggesting that it causes more severe illness, its higher transmissibility could lead to a spike in cases if preventive measures not followed.
Dr. Rakesh Mishra, a senior virologist, explains: “The JN.1 variant has not shown any unusual behaviour so far in terms of severity, but its spread in Southeast Asia is concerning. Continued genome sequencing and monitoring are crucial.”
What Should You Do Now?
With the virus showing signs of resurgence, especially in Kerala and Maharashtra, here are a few expert-recommended precautions:
- Wear a mask in crowded or indoor settings
- Maintain good hand hygiene
- Avoid unnecessary travel if unwell
- Ensure your COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters are up to date
- Stay informed about local health advisories
As the monsoon season approaches—a time when respiratory infections typically rise—health experts stress the importance of not letting our guard down. While India has made tremendous progress in managing the pandemic, the virus remains unpredictable.
Stay alert, stay safe, and continue following COVID-appropriate behaviour.
