New Delhi, 25 May 2025: In a concerning development, a 21-year-old man from Mumbra, Thane, succumbed to COVID-19 on May 24, 2025, while undergoing treatment at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Kalwa Hospital. This marks the fourth COVID-19-related death in Maharashtra amid a recent uptick in cases.
Patient Details and Medical Background
The young man was admitted to the hospital on May 22, 2025, presenting with complications related to diabetic ketoacidosis. He tested positive for COVID-19 on May 23 and passed away the following day. Dr. Aniruddha Malgaonkar, the hospital’s superintendent, indicated that while the patient was COVID-19 positive, the primary cause of death was his underlying condition.
Rising COVID-19 Cases in Maharashtra
Maharashtra has reported a noticeable increase in COVID-19 cases over the past ten days. On May 24 alone, the state recorded 47 new cases, bringing the total number of active cases to 166. Mumbai accounted for 30 of these new cases, followed by Pune with seven, and Thane with six. Since January, the state has documented 7,144 positive cases.
National Perspective and Health Ministry’s Response
The Union Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation across multiple states, including Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. On May 24, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava reviewed the matter regarding COVID-19 cases reported across these states.
Health experts advise caution but urge the public not to panic. Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, stated, “At the moment, the situation is under control. There are, at most, sporadic cases, which are also rare. Even the present cases are being managed very easily.”
