India Witnesses Remarkable 98.7% Decline in Kala-azar Cases, Says Health Ministry
In a significant breakthrough, the Union Health Ministry announced a staggering 98.7% decline in cases of Kala-azar since 2007. The data, released by the ministry, revealed a drastic reduction from 44,533 cases in 2007 to a mere 834 cases in 2022, signaling a commendable achievement in the fight against this life-threatening disease.
During a meeting chaired by Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the efforts of state governments were applauded for their pivotal role in achieving this milestone. Dr. Mandaviya commended the interventions implemented by the government, such as the construction of pucca houses through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), rural electrification, and timely testing and treatment. He emphasized the significance of periodic high-level reviews and incentivizing efforts through award distribution to states, districts, and blocks.
Government Efforts and Interventions Drive Successful Battle Against the Deadly Disease
The Health Minister further highlighted that the central government is providing comprehensive support to all states, including active case detection, surveillance, treatment, and the supply of diagnostic kits, medicines, and sprays. These efforts have created a robust ecosystem for early detection and timely treatment of Kala-azar, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the eradication campaign.
Kala-azar, also known as visceral leishmaniasis, is considered the second deadliest parasitic killer globally, following malaria. The disease has posed a major health threat in several countries, including India. However, concerted efforts and focused interventions have significantly reduced its prevalence.
Dr. Mandaviya urged states affected by Kala-azar to ensure regular reviews and micro-stratification in high-risk blocks. He emphasized the need for continued vigilance and sustained efforts to completely eliminate the disease.
In 2021, approximately 90% of global Kala-azar cases were reported from eight countries, with India contributing 11.5% of the total cases reported worldwide. The disease was primarily endemic in 633 blocks across 54 districts in four states: Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. It is noteworthy that Uttar Pradesh achieved its elimination target at the block level in 2019, followed by West Bengal in 2017.
The success in combating Kala-azar serves as a testament to the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between the government and various stakeholders. The significant decline in cases not only represents a major public health victory but also brings hope to millions of individuals living in affected areas.
