After hot and scorching summer, the monsoon season is usually welcomed by people in India. The season brings relief from the scorching heat, along with it also brings monsoon illnesses like cold and cough.
According to Dr. Sushrut Ganpule, Consultant- Chest physician and pulmonologist, Jupiter Hospital, Pune, the monsoon season brings many cases of monsoon illnesses like cold and cough, severe respiratory infections, and increased hospitalizations.
“Some of the most common monsoon diseases are viral fever, common cold, cough, pneumonia, malaria, dengue, typhoid, etc,” Ganpule said.
The reason behind the increase in cases of such disease during the monsoon season is hot, humid, and wet weather which makes it very favorable for the micro-organisms to reproduce and multiply.
“The viral infections are high in monsoons because of the damp and humid weather, a whether perfect for the viral growth. Patients with pre-existing respiratory diseases such as Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are mostly prone to respiratory exacerbations,” the doctor said.
Precaution is very important during these times to keep you healthy and fit. Apart from that, proper hygiene is something that everyone must follow during the rainy season. Also, periodic preventive health checkups are important to detect diseases at an early stage. This will help you in getting early treatment and eventually get cured.
Opt for a healthy diet during the rainy season and keep yourself away from mosquito bites. However, if you or any of your family members, especially children, suffer from any illness, do not take it lightly. Many symptoms can be misleading and need medical attention.
“Taking suitable precautions and staying informed are among the best ways to avoid monsoon-related ailments. Maintenance of proper hygiene, good compliance with medicines, and following proper adult vaccination schedule can safeguard the patients from the complications of respiratory infections in the monsoon season,” Dr Ganpule said.
