“Higher Import Taxes Don’t Help Cheaper Healthcare Delivery Goals”: Dr. Naresh Trehan

Saiyed Danish Jamal

New Delhi, February 1-While the Union Budget 2020-21 proposed to create a holistic atmosphere for manufacturing medical devices, the cess on the import of medical devices remains high.

This was a disappointment for many in the healthcare industry as this would further mean the cost of treatment will also go up and it stands in contradiction to the announcement of taking affordable healthcare to tier 2, tier 3 cities and town of India, a demand that CII had proposed.

While speaking to Healthwire Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman CII, National Healthcare Council, said,”The more you lower the taxes, the cheaper you can provide the delivery of healthcare. So from that point of view it does not help to pay higher taxes or GST we have to pay because that is increasing the cost of delivery.”
